Netnakisum are an all female quartet from Vienna in Austria. The group have been hailed by the press as mistresses of sheer musicianship who are great fun and a mixture of classical and world music. When they take the stage, hips and bright-coloured Dirndls ( Austrian national dress) swing. Tradition flirts with the erotic, where the over the top use of traditional costume is a flippant take on widespread conservative mentality.
But provocation is not their business, nor their intention. The use of costumes highlights their way of playing with the old fashioned and the contemporary. Netnakisum (the German word for “traditional musician”, spelled backwards) reverse themselves and the audience’s expectations – not only through wordplay and striking scenery: it’s this string quartet’s musicianship and great vibe that says it all.
They appeared on the Ray D’arcy show on Thursday morning, and Itchy Feet have an mp3 of it on their blog.
