June 30th – Sept 30th: ‘Up The Walls’ Exhibition at The Model

This summer, The Model will host an exhibition of Irish and international painting entitled Up The Walls. Each of the artists featured in this exhibition are exploring painting in new, exploratory and innovative ways. A collective of seven painters brought together for this unique show forms a representation of contemporary international painting practices in the exhibition.

Quebecois painter Etienne Zack lives between Los Angeles, California and Vancouver, British Columbia. Etienne’s paintings appear abstract in quality, however they often represent landscapes and make visible histories associable with these landscapes.

Based in Berlin, Carsten Fock makes full-room painting installations. For The Model, Fock will be this spring’s Artist in Residence at The Model kindly supported by Goethe Institut. While on-site, Carsten Fock will make a full room installation painting in his manner of combining different materials and painterly gestures based on his situation in Sligo.

Based in Ireland, Mairead O’hEocha produces unique, rich and textured oil paintings of landscape and urban settings. Also based in Ireland, Sonia Shiel has used painting in an exploratory and painterly fashion – transforming human scenarios or subjects into quirky, surreal and dream-like images.

Two Scandinavian artists feature in the exhibition. Swedish painter Anna Bjerger produces figurative paintings that are imbued with nostalgia while appearing highly concentrated on the present. Danish painter Christian Schmidt-Rasmussen produces paintings of figurative, urban and landscape subjects, sometimes referencing the history of painting in his work.

Based between Berlin and Bucharest, the Romanian artist duo Mona Vatamanu & Florin Tudor present a series of painted depictions of the world’s revolutions – from the Romanian over-throw of Ceausescu in 1989 to the more recent Arab Uprising.

The exhibition opens on June 30th at 6 pm with a public reception and will run until September 30.

Curator’s tours of Up The Walls will take place on
Wednesdays July 18, August 8 and August 22 at 1 pm.

The Model’s new opening hours are 10 – 5, Tuesday through Saturday and 12 – 5 on Sunday.
