Programme for Culture Night Sligo 2013 Unveiled

Friday September 20th.

Culture Night Sligo sees the region’s foremost arts venues collaborate on an evening teeming with rich cultural experiences all of which are free of charge.

The Model, Hawk’s Well Theatre, The Factory Performance Space and Sligo Youth Theatre together will transform Sligo into a thriving cultural hub for the night. The venues will open their doors and spill onto the streets to offer exciting and colourful cultural experiences for families and the general public. World-class exhibitions, acclaimed musicians, experimental music pieces, theatre, live art, workshops and circus performers will entertain & inspire crowds from the early evening until late into the night.

Baby Culture Night
Culture Night this year has a special focus on events for families and young children.  Monkeyshine Theatre and Kids’ Own Publishing are collaborating with The Model (9141405) and Hawk’s Well Theatre (9161518) to create exciting and magical immersive experiences for young children as part of Baby Culture Night

Lull for Babies’ (2.30pm- 7pm) Kids’ Own Publishing aids both Hawk’s Well Theatre and The Model to create soothing lull spaces for parents and babies to chill out in the company of artist Maree Hensey and musician Kieran Mullally. ‘Lull’ takes place at Hawks Well at 2.30pm & 3.15 pm & at The Model 4.30 & 5.15pm and is suitable for ages 6-18 months, duration 30mins.

The Model presents, ‘Playtime’ at 3pm which is a unique collaboration between PassePartout Theatre and Cork Circus, which has been commissioned specially for Culture Night at The Model. Set in an old Railway Station, ‘Playtime’ is a show for families, suitable for children 3-5 yrs upwards; it’s the story of the joyously inquisitive station master Monsieur Gusto.

Two Worlds with a Journey in-between runs from 4pm-7pm in both The Model and Hawk’s Well Theatre.  Intermittent 10 minute theatrical performances will take place in entertainment spaces specially created by Monkeyshine Theatre. Monsieur Gusto and a friend will then accompany families on a magical journey through Sligo’s streets from one venue to another on several occasions throughout the afternoon/ evening.

County Sligo Youth Theatre presents, ‘Jolly Beggars’ at 7pm & 9pm at the Fridge, Lower Quay Street when laughter will ring through the air as enthusiastic young actors perform three short 15th Century farcical plays, boisterous audience participation will be encouraged.  This free performance is directed by Jean- Marie Perinetti, the performance is free but booking is advisable. sligoyt@gmail.com or 0719138489.

The Factory Open Evening takes place in the Factory Performance Space, Lower Quay Street from 7pm-9pm with a series of workshops and a behind-the-scenes experience of the theatre and the studios in the Factory Yard. The musical highlight of Culture Night Sligo 2013 is ‘RESOUND at The Model, which brings together the creative talents of six diverse musicians, a visual artist and a poet for a very special show. Inspired by collaborations throughout her continuing residency at the Cork Opera House, Crash Ensemble Cellist and Co-Artistic Director, Kate Ellis has joined forces with RTE Lyric FM Composer in Residence Linda Buckley, rising star Laura Sheeran, jazz maestro and world music specialist Francesco Turrisi, old-time and traditional fiddle player and composer, Adrian Hart and the inimitable Chequerboard. Together, this unique group of some of Ireland’s finest music makers presents original music with live drawing from visual artist Rory Tangney. Award winning poet Billy Ramsell will complete the line-up with his inspirational words of wisdom.

Exhibitions & Open Studios

The Model is one of Ireland’s leading centres for contemporary art, and houses the wonderful Niland Collection of twentieth century Irish Art.  Exhibitions on view for Culture Night include Jack B Yeats, The Circus as a Metaphor,Lebanese artist Rabih Mroué whose politically charged exhibition includes his acclaimed film The Pixalated Revolution, and Tilo Schulz Tied Up and Down: How to consider force a privilege which incorporates a installation on the Garavogue river as well as the galleries.

The Model Artists’ Studios will be open on the night from 6 – 9pm with many of Sligo’s most accomplished professional artists in attendance to discuss their work with visitors.

“Room” The Model Studio Artists’ Gallery present green is pink a collaborative exploration and conversation on the nature of loss between artists Cléa van der Grijn and Paul Roy.

‘The Tide is Comin’ a mixed media exhibition featuring work from James Fraher, Maura Gilligan and Catherine Fanning will open at Hawk’s Well Theatre at 7pm.

Culture Night is an initiative coordinated by Temple Bar Cultural Trust and supported by the Department of Arts Heritage and the Gaeltacht in partnership with Sligo Borough Council, Sligo County Council, Hawks Well Theatre, Blue Raincoat Theatre Company, Sligo Youth Theatre, Sligo Arts Service and The Model.
