Niland Collection painting shortlisted in RTÉ’s Search for Ireland’s Favourite Painting

The Niland Collection painting Communicating With Prisoners by Jack B. Yeats has been shortlisted as one of Ireland’s favourite Top 10 paintings in RTÉ’s Masterpiece: Ireland’s Favourite Painting, hosted by Mike Murphy.

The Niland Collection is the only regional art collection to have an artwork in the shortlist, a demonstration of the calibre of work held in Sligo’s Municipal Collection housed at The Model in Sligo.

A list of one hundred paintings was compiled by invited public institutions and a distinguished panel, including Murphy, Gemma Tipton, Peter Cherry, First Lady Sabina Higgins, Oliver Dowling and Robert O’Byrne, whittled down the selection to a final ten.

An intense campaign to determine Ireland’s best-loved work by public vote is intended to increase awareness of the immense riches in our public art collections and to encourage people to get out and see these works for themselves.

In voting Murphy encouraged the public to, “Trust your own response, your own instincts. These are, after all, your paintings and, in these difficult times, they are a real source of delight and inspiration on your doorstep.’’

The campaign will run for 5 weeks and voting can be done through RTÉ’s Masterpiece website, www.rte.ie/masterpiece or by sending a postcard to RTÉ’s Freepost address.

President Michael D Higgins will announce the final winner on a special edition of RTÉ’s The Works on May 24, which will also feature a special show devoted to each of the paintings and its merits.

Communicating With Prisoners will also feature in The Model’s forthcoming Niland Collection exhibition Father and Son, which opens on May 12. This Yeats work is entrenched in romanticism and is particularly commended for the way in which it conveys the mood of local social turbulence, captured ingeniously in each brush stroke.

You can vote for Communicating With Prisoners as Ireland’s Favourite Painting through RTÉ’s Masterpiece website, www.rte.ie/masterpiece or by sending a postcard to RTÉ’s Freepost address. RTÉ, Freepost, Dublin 4. The closing date for postal entries is Friday 18th May.

Now in its third year, love:live music continues to grow from strength to strength and this year, the event will take place on the Summer Solstice, Thursday 21st June to coincide with celebrations for International Music Day – Fête de la Musique.

The love:live music movement is a celebration of Ireland’s musical identity and aims to promote access to Irish music for everyone. 120 countries around the world will co-ordinate their national music day on Thursday 21st June and Irish musicians, both professional and amateur, are urged to occupy a stage and create a free music experience. Here is a guideline of simple steps to start:

  2. Now get your planning boots on and book, organize and plan your event time for 21st June 2012
  3. Once you have a solid idea, you can speak with us at love:live music or simply go ahead to step 4!

Visual Art: Exhibition “All Humans Do” opens at The Model, April 21st

April 15, 2012 at 7:12 pm | Posted in Arts | Leave a comment

The exhibition All humans do opens at The Model on April 21, 2012 next at 6pm and will feature 12 Irish Artists including David Beattie, Rhona Byrne, Brendan Earley, Aleana Egan, Fergus Feehily, Mark Garry, Kevin Kirwan, Bea Mc Mahon, Niamh O’Malley, Locky Morris, Dennis Mc Nulty & Tasmin Snow.

The show, curated by Aoife Tunney, attempts to balance the familiar with the complex and give way to another way of seeing objects, materials and images that we accept in our everyday lives. By looking and engaging without trying too hard to understand, we perhaps get some time to reflect on knowing who we are and what truths we are seeking out.

The idea for the show comes from a scene in the science fiction film Solaris by Russian director Andrei Tarkovsky. Set in a space station the film revolves around a psychologist Kris Kelvin and his confused wife Hari. “I don’t even know who I am anymore. Who am I? Do you know who you are?” Hari asks. “Yes, all humans do,” Kris Kelvin replies.

This idea of absolute certainty in knowing who we are in our contemporary world is something worth questioning. It is a function of our biology to strive to survive day to day. Our futures and formed identities are dependent on the choices we make. The choices of materials and processes used by the artists in this show are quietly, yet confidently testing and doubting our understanding of our surroundings and knowledge.

Conceptual art in this show prods the appearances and meaning of what we see. The works lie in between architectural form and science fiction sets, places of pilgrimage, of musical compositions, of handmade scientific machines, of the natural world, human states of mind and the grandiose museum style presentation of art. Similar to a pilgrimage, this show hinges on the moment when we shed all preconceived ideas in order to find and see something deeper. That moment when humans don’t fully know.

All humans do was previously on show at the White Box gallery in New York in January 2012.
