In The House (Dans La Maison)

Dir: François Ozon. 105 minutes, France, 2012, subtitled
Wed 08 & Thurs 09 May. at 8pm Sun 12 May. at 3pm €8/€7/€6
F.abrice Luchini shines as an old-fashioned French tutor in a trendy high school, who thinks he’s uncovered a rare talent when reading student Ernst Umhauer’s vivid writing exercise evocations of a classmate’s idealised bourgeois home life and alluring mother (Emmanuelle Seigner). Soon he’s encouraging his prize-pupil to take the tale further, then adding his own pedagogic ‘improvements’ – but as we see all this played out, it’s hard to know where reality ends and individual fantasy begins.

North Of The Sun

Dir: Inge Wegge, Jørn Nyseth Ranum. Norway, 2012, 46 min
Sun 12 May. 6pm. / Free (In assosiation with Clean Coasts Week)
Inge and Jørn are not your typical surfers. For nine months, the two have been based on a deserted beach on an island off the coast of Norway, where they have found not only perfect waves, but also a large quantity of washed-up waste. Their plan is to stay until they collect at least a tonne of the rubbish the sea deposits on the beach every day. Featuring fantastic shots of nature, the film captures adventurous surfing during the polar night and its heroes’ “regular” beach life infused with the pure joy of living beyond civilisation.

The Paperboy

Dir: Lee Daniels. 107 minutes, USA, 2012.
Wed 15 & Thurs 16 May. at 8pm and Sun 19 May. at 3pm CERT 16 €8/€7/€6.
‘The Paperboy’ is a lurid slice of Southern Gothic noir with an enjoyable air of disreputability. Star studded cast!! Matthew McConaughey is Ward Jansen, a reporter in late-‘60s Florida who believes that Death Row inmate Hillary Van Wetter (a truly scuzzy John Cusack) may be innocent. Enlisting the aid of his brother Jack (Zac Efron) and Charlotte (Nicole Kidman), a woman with a soft spot for felons who has been corresponding with Van Wetter, Jansen is drawn deeper into a fever dream of racial and sexual tensions.
