Now in its third year, the Certain Three Tour returns in January 2012 for a ten date run. The creation of Irish based booking agency Word of Mouth, the idea is to feature three acts each with something different to offer and send them out as a triple bill with an alternating running order. The two previous tours have featured O Emperor, We Cut Corners, Alessi’s Ark and The Ambience Affair amongst others.

Carefully chosen for the 2012 tour are three acts, who have created a significant stir during 2011. These are Katie Kim , The Lost Brothers and Puzzle Muteson. The Certain Three will be presented in the intimate surrounds of The Acoustic Room at the Model.

Katie Kim
Katie Kim is the pseudonym of Katie Sullivan, who performs and records slowcore, ethereal, ambient folk/pop, paired with vocals that have been compared to Zola Jesus, Coco Rosie, Cat Power and Joanna Newsom, the music revolves and swims around layers of fuzzy drips and murky clouds but always seems to come to an elegant conclusion.

Her debut release “Twelve” was admired and praised throughout the country and prompted much collaboration with a spectrum of other artists including David Kitt, Milosh, Halves, Mike Scott and Ten Past Seven among others.
Katie Kim has just finished recording and producing her next release, “Cover & Flood”.

The Lost Brothers
Since the release of their acclaimed debut album, “Trails of the Lonely”, the Lost Brothers have kept on the move, calling no place their home.

Last year alone has seen them perform in London on the same bill as Bob Dylan & Van Morrison, they opened the main stage at this summer’s Electric Picnic festival, they played the Other Voices Show, with a lineup that included the best of Irish actors (such as Gabriel Byrne), musicians (including Glen Hansard), and writers (Roddy Doyle to name just one), alongside American artists (Martha Wainwright and Laurie Andersonand they have been busy in Nashville recording with Brendan Benson of the Raconteurs.

Puzzle Muteson
Puzzle Muteson is the alter ego of an enigmatic songwriter from the Isle of Wight, who renders his music in a tremulous tenor over a finely spun web of fingerpicked guitar.

Puzzle has toured Ireland and the U.K., opening up for the likes of The Fruit Bats, Death Vessel and Sub Pop darling Daniel Martin Moore. After obsessively listening to Puzzle Muteson’s own raw tapes, producer- arranger duo Valgeir Sigurðsson and Nico Muhly nurtured the songs that now inhabit his debut ecording “En Garde”, released via Valgeir’s Bedroom Community label. The record shimmers with the signature value of Puzzle’s collaborators who have previously worked with the likes of Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, Antony &the Johnsons), Sam Amidon and many others.

The Cappa ensemble will play music by Bach, Liszt, Bax and Mozart as well as a new work by IAN WILSON especially commissioned
by Music Network

Named after the celebrated 17th-century Italian violin-maker Gioffredo Cappa, this exciting young chamber ensemble has quickly established itself as a quartet of outstanding artistry, touring extensively in Australasia and Japan as well as throughout the UK. Winner of Music Network’s Young Musicwide competition in 2009, the quartet boasts a line-up of top performers in their own right.

“Noct is a night piece, inspired by the constellated sky and the idea of gathering darkness. Noct relates most closely to the slower movements of the Mozart and Bax works, but more like an after-image rather than a reflection.” Ian Wilson

“In Schumann’s Piano Quartet, it was as if the lights had come on. Everything worked. There was subtlety and power in the playing, and an easy give-and-take not apparent elsewhere. This was the kind of spot-on performance that must have brought them their Young Musicwide success in the first place.” Michael Dervan Irish Times.

Tucan play The Model, Saturday August 20th

July 26, 2011 at 9:06 pm | Posted in Music | Leave a comment

Originally a duo composed of guitarists Donal Gunne and Pearse Feeney, Túcan is now a four-piece outfit with the added fat bass lines of Keith Kelly and thumping drums of Paul Wehrly. The expansion to a four-piece band has added another dimension to the energetic play of the acoustic instrumentalists Gunne and Feeney. They are one of the most exciting Irish bands on the live scene in Ireland with an explosive show that spell-binds audiences leaving them gasping for breath.

Following the huge success of Túcan’s “Factory Sessions” videos, the Daft Punk and Prodigy covers which took youtube and facebook by storm and catapulted the band, temporarily, as “most popular Irish music group”- the band have been working on a new album and entirely new live show which will debut as part of The Model’s Lúnasa programme.  Look forward to a new sound accompanied by a visual show by this innovative ground breaking Sligo based band. “We have been playing around with some different instruments so it will be broader sonically than the last album. It will be less latin influenced and more like acoustic post-rock with some funky grooves. Our plan is to invite a few musical friends into the recording so you can expect a few surprises ranging from brass to beats to, dare I say it, even vocals… “ (Donal Gunne –Túcan)

Special guets and late night DJ’s. This is a standing event, but we don’t expect you to stand still!

Bobby Kimball – Biography

Bobby started playing piano at the young age of 4 years old. His Mother had the rare gift of “Perfect Pitch”, and could play just about anything she heard. This was an inspiration to Bobby and his oldest brother, and soon both of them started their own bands when Bobby was only 8 year old. The members of Bobby’s band were the younger brothers of his oldest brother’s band.
Growing up in Louisiana was truly a gift for Bobby, due to such a wide variety of music styles and fantastic musicians to play with. Living about 10 miles from the Texas border played a big role in his music career, because there were so many 5000 seat clubs stationed along the Texas border inside Louisiana. The drinking age in Texas was 21 years old, and in Louisiana it was 18 years old. This leaves little doubt as to why these 5000 seat clubs were completely packed on the weekends, and it was a huge influence on Bobby’s decision to become a musician instead of a Medical Doctor. After 5 years of University studies in the medical field, Bobby decided to follow the path that made him the happiest, and he became a full-time musician.

After playing and singing with about 15 different bands in Louisiana and Texas, Bobby ended up in a band called “The Levee Band”, which became a high watermark of musicianship and talent. In the middle of a tour with The Levee band, Bobby received a call from a long time musician friend, Jon Smith, who asked him to come to LA and sing with the musicians who had made up the band “Three Dog Night”, one of Bobby’s favorite bands ever. He had to make a very hard decision to leave, not only one of the best bands he had ever played with, but also his native Louisiana home.

After arriving in LA to meet the band, things changed drastically for Bobby. He was finally in the city where the music industry thrived, and most of the great musicians and singers who had created the hit songs that drew him into the fold to become a musician were living and working. After this band got together, they signed a contract with CBS Records under the name “S.S. Fools”, which was the title of the first and only LP recorded by them. This band lasted for about 18 months before Bobby decided to leave them for better opportunities. During the rehearsal stages of “S.S. Fools”, Bobby first met, and became friends with Jeffery Porcaro (then, the drummer with “Steely Dan”), and David Paich (who had just co-written the Grammy winning “Silk Degrees” LP with Boz Scaggs). Jeff and David were at most of our rehearsals, because they loved the music of “Three Dog Night” as well. A few months after leaving S.S. Fools, Bobby was asked by Jeff and David (the initial founders of Toto), to become the lead singer. There were no questions, nor hesitation about his decision to join this band. They were the best musicians Bobby had ever heard, and a perfect platform for his voice.

The very first LP Toto released, entitled “Toto”, broke out with the massive hit single, “Hold The Line”. The band was nominated for a Grammy as “Best New Band” that year, but lost to “A Taste of Honey”.
Toto’s music was very well received and the band built a huge following of very loyal fans. Bobby was in the band for the recording of the first 4 records (“Toto”, “Hydra”, “Turn Back”, and “TotoIV”). It was the “Toto IV CD” that absolutely defined the band, and it’s future. At the 1982 Grammy Awards, The “Toto IV” CD was nominated for a “record breaking” NINE Grammy Awards. Out of these nine nominations, the band won SIX Grammy Awards, based on the strength and popularity of the song, “Rosanna”. Also, Steve Lukather, co-writer of “Turn Your Love Around”, with Jay Gradon and Bill Champlin, won a 7th Grammy. Altogether, the band brought home 7 Grammy Awards that evening, …which set a precedent for the number of Grammy Awards ever won by a single band in one year.
