The beautiful seaside village of Rosses Point Co. Sligo will host a a trad event with a difference: A Seisiún Mór on Sunday, March 11, with non-stop Traditional Music at village venues, from 11am until 11pm.

The event is to raise awareness and funds for the MS Northwest Therapy Centre, Ballytivnan, Sligo. Everyone: Groups, Bands and Solo Artists, Marchers, Mummers, Dancers, Drummers, Singers and Seanachaís, Lilters and Listeners, of all ages and experience, are invited and encouraged to get involved, play a set, and join in the fun.

Early birds can enjoy music from mid morning over coffee and scones in The Waterfront Restaurant, overlooking Oyster Bay, in the heart of the village. As the session develops throughout the day, and on into the evening, entertainers will also be welcomed to Austies and Harrys Bar, as more than 150 performers make this a very special event. Regular seisiúns in Rosses Point by local musicians are a great success, and along with a Sea Shanty Festival in June, the village has a great tradition of music and singing. This event will show off scenic Rosses Point, lift the spirits of all who help and attend, and raise a bob or two for the MS Northwest Therapy Centre. Refreshments will be available for Musicans.

As its a Seisiún Mór enterance is free…. and the exit shall be interesting. Sponsorship cards are available. The idea is to sponsor a tune or a set of tunes for some small change. There will be an attempt to set a record for The Longest Shortest Trad Tune as musicians stand shoulder to shoulder along the waterfront to play in unison. We would be delighted if people in the wider community, as well as the performers who come to this event will take a sponsorship card, raise some cash for this worthy cause and help make the day a massive success.

John is supported by Irish stand up Rory O’Hanlon. Rory’s style of hilarious autobiographical and observational stand up comedy has made him one of the top performers and MC’s on the Irish and UK comedy circuit. His style of comedy also seems to travel extremely well, allowing Rory to play two sell out shows at the Edinburgh Fringe Festial in 2009 and 2010 while also performing both years at The Best of Irish Show at the world famous Stand Comedy Club.

Nine enthusiastic young actors from County Sligo Youth Theatre are preparing for their big production of 2012. For some of these young performers, it will be their first time in front of an audience and there is both trepidation and excitement.

Flying Overhead Lines is an adaptation of Trumpets and Raspberries by Dario Fo, the Italian playwright. He is famed for employing comedic methods of the ancient Italian commedia dell’arte to address the absurdity of society and political corruption.

Follow this grotesque comedy as it takes you on a wild journey through economics, politics and the media.

In the film, a line from W.B. Yeats’ famous poem “The Lake Isle of Innisfree” “…for peace comes dropping slow…” is inscribed in light across the landscape of Sligo by up to seventy people from all over Ireland. The full short film is now available to view online  (above).

Conceived and directed by Sligo-based artist Lisa Vandegrift Davala and commissioned by the Arts Office, Sligo County Council, the short film ‘…for peace comes dropping slow…’ was shot at a number of Sligo locations during the summer of 2010.

Three of the region’s most scenic locations feature across the film including Carrane Hill, Culleenamore Strand and Lough Gill at Parke’s Castle, the location of the Lake Isle of Innisfree. The original film score includes the moving Gaelic vocals and fiddle of the legendary Seamie O’Dowd (son of Joe O’Dowd and long-time member of Dervish).

With cinematography by Cian de Buitléar, Tony Kearns as film editor, and Darren Carr as the stills photographer, the film has been well-received since its release in Autumn of 2010. Nominated in the Best Irish Short Category at the 23rd Foyle International Film Festival in Derry, the film has received screenings at the New Hope Film Festival (Pennsylvania), Culture Night Sligo 2010, Sligo Live Festival 2010, Strule Arts Centre, Omagh, The Model Sligo, and the Corona Fastnet Short Film Festival in Cork.

Running from February 11 until May 6 2012 this special exhibition has been curated by two groups of young people from Sligo and Antrim as part of The Model’s Young Curator’s Programme.

The title, Double Vision, reflects the shared vision of the two groups of young people in putting together the exhibition and is also the name of a song by Rory Gallagher, who once played the Flamingo Ballroom in Ballymena in 1971. This particularly highlights the theme of art and music connecting and bringing people together, which is integral to this project.

It features work from The Niland Collection and the social history collection of The Mid-Antrim Museum in Ballymena and also includes a Silent Disco in the collection galleries, with music provide by local young musicians. The opening will include live performances from local bands with a reception of milkshakes and hotdogs as served in The Flamingo Ballroom, Ballymena, Co. Antrim.

The Model’s Young Curator Programme involves a group of young people aged 15-20 who share an interest in visual art meeting regularly at The Model to devise creative projects, establish networks with other youth groups and share their thoughts and opinions about a range of topics. Together they have formulated a trailer for the event, you can watch it here.

Over two years the groups have worked with curators at both The Model and The Braid Museum to gain an insight into working with both collections and acquire an understanding of the role of a curator.

Young Curators has been the result of an International Fund for Ireland cross-border partnership project, bringing together young people to consider issues of citizenship, identity and cultural democracy.

This project would not have happened without the generous support of The International Fund for Ireland and has been run in partnership with The Braid Museum, Ballymena, Co. Antrim.

This project has been kindly supported by the Arts Council of Ireland, Sligo Borough Council, Sligo County Council and Fás.

Director of The Model from 2005 to 2008, she oversaw a nationally and internationally significant programme, including The Eternal Now: Warhol and the Factory and an exhibition and unique performance by Patti Smith.

In her role as Director of the Irish Film Institute in Dublin, which she has held since 2008, she has been collaborating with The Model in developing their high quality cinema programme IFI @ The Model.

Featuring many of the best releases in the IFI’s programme, The Model’s screens national and international films on their first run in Ireland.

Commenting on the announcement, The Model’s current Director / Curator Seamus Kealy was delighted about the appointment of Ms. Glennie and “is looking forward to more collaborations in the future.”
