Winter Gems: Upcoming Films at The Model for December

As winter begins to creep in, The Model continues to welcome and warm up its audience with some enthralling world-class Irish and international film choices- beginning this week with the elegant thriller, Barbara.

Starring Nina Hoss, writer-director Christian Petzold’s Barbara is Germany’s submission for the 2013 Best Foreign Language Film Academy Award. The political / romantic drama also earned Petzold silver for Best Director at this year’s Berlin Film Festival. Set in icy Germany in 1980, Barbara a doctor has submitted an application to emigrate to the West.  Hers, is an intense and taut life of surveillance.

Highlight of the season goes to Lenny Abrahamson’s new film,  the provocative and brilliant, What Richard Did. Released in October 2012, it received an avalanche of positive reviews, the Irish Times giving it 5 stars and memorably calling it, ‘The best Irish film to emerge from Ireland since the turn of the millennium.’ What Richard Did is a slow-burning, startling piece of work. Based on Kevin Power’s ‘Bad Day In Blackrock’, a fictionalised story on the assault on Brian Murphy outside the Burlington Hotel 12 years ago, making What Richard Did’ s close to home origins inescapable. A must see, starring Wicklow actor Jack Reynor, a rising star to look out for in the future.

Love / Amour is Michael Haneke’s second Palme d’Or Winner, presents a version of love far removed from cliché romance, it is devastatingly original and unflinching in the way it examines the effect of love on death. Starring French veteran actors, Jean- Louis Trintigant and Ennanuelle Riva.

Encounter – a short film set in Sligo Fundit Campaign

Since September 2011, Sligo based community group ‘Sabona Community Productions’ (meaning “hello” in Zulu) have been working with local filmmaker Sinead Dolan on a collaborative project “Encounter”, a short romantic comedy set in Sligo; African boy meets Irish girl.

http://vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=35626050&server=vimeo.com&show_title=0&show_byline=0&show_portrait=0&color=00adef&fullscreen=1&autoplay=0&loop=0

Bringing together a diverse group of international and Irish people who live in Sligo the script, which is the product of Create’s Artist in the Community scheme reflects real-life experiences incorporating themes of difference, cross-cultural issues and identity but is first and foremost a romantic comedy.

Jonah visits Sligo from South Africa but finds himself falling for Irish girl, Bella. He quickly realizes that the ways of Sligo are quite different to home and has to learn what makes an Irish girl tick.

They have a cast and crew ready, willing and able to bring this story from script to screen. Shooting “Encounter” is also an opportunity for participants to gain experience and put their new skills into practice. They have commitments from a range of professionals in the area who are willing to share their skills and time, but the group will need transport, some crew and equipment to realise the project.

So they need a little help, and that’s where you come in! Join their community as funders on www.fundit.ie/project/encounter where they have just launched our crowd funding campaign. You can fund as little as €5.00 so they can get ready to shout “Lights.Camera.Action!”

“LOLS, this is one of our favourite project films to date! Made in ‘Slollywood’, this is community film-making at it’s best!” fundit team

Dreams of A Life screening at The Model Cinema, Feb 15th – 19th

The Model Cinema is screening the haunting and provocative documentary Dreams of a Life from Wednesday, 15 February to Sunday 19 February. This new Irish co-production tells the true story of a woman that society tragically forgot.

Nobody noticed when thirty-eight year old Joyce Vincent died in her bed-sit above a small shopping mall in North London in 2003. Her skeleton was finally discovered three years later, with her heating and television still running in her flat. Newspaper reports offered few details of Joyce’s life – not even a photograph. Dreams of a Life is filmmaker Carol Morley’s quest to discover who Joyce was and how she came to be forgotten. The film was produced by Cannon and Morley productions alongside Irish producer James Mitchell of Soho Moon Pictures, with the participation of Bórd Scannán na hÉireann/Irish Film Board.

Morley placed adverts in newspapers, on the Internet and on the side of a London taxi, and discovered Joyce’s former friends, lovers and colleagues. Their testimonies together with re-imagined scenes from Joyce’s life (featuring a touching portrayal from rising star Zawe Ashton) form a multi-layered portrait of Joyce, and an insight into the world she inhabited. Dreams of a Life is about a life lived in modern times. It is a film about Joyce Vincent and a film about ourselves; about how much and yet how little we may ever know each other.

The film’s Irish Producer, James Mitchell says “More and more of us live in cities.  In the Facebook age, we think perhaps we’re more connected.  Joyce Vincent’s story, brilliantly told by director Carol Morley, asks us – certainly me – many questions.  I’m delighted that this first project from my new Irish company, Soho Moon, was co-financed by the Irish Film Board and the new Irish film fund Shoot For The Moon.”

Alan Maher of the Irish Film Board said “Dreams of a Life is a brilliant docudrama that came to Ireland to shoot its beautifully realised reconstructions at Hannay Studios, and to finish the film at Egg post production, working with Irish talent led by James Mitchell and Rachel Lysaght.  It represents another successful collaboration with our UK partners at Film 4/Channel 4 and the BFI; Canadian partners at E1; and exciting new partners Dogwoof and Shoot for the Moon.”

Nothing has lingered in my mind like this.’ Peter Bradshaw, THE GUARDIAN

A compelling, compassionate mix, Dreams speaks volumes about the mysteries of other people’s lives**** Total Film
