The Hawk’s Well theatre is very pleased to welcome Scottish Songstress Eddi Reader back to Sligo for a one night only performance on Wednesday the 29th February.
The extremely talented singer-songwriter, who is well known for her hit single ‘‘Perfect’’ with the band ‘’Fairground Attraction’’ and her enduring solo work, is set apart by the depth and quality of her emotional performance and her ability not only to move the listener but to connect her experience to that of her audience. Her ability to blend the traditional and the contemporary along with her rare blend of meltingly true vocals and towering romanticism make for an always enjoyable performance. Her ability to capture mood and feeling in her recordings and through her live performances has transformed her into one of British music’s most thrilling and affecting performers.
Eddi Reader was born in Glasgow, Scotland where she learned to write and perform music at an early age. In the early 80’s she travelled around Europe before moving to London where she quickly became a sought after session vocalist. She famously harmonized with Annie Lennox whilst touring with the ‘’Eurhythmics’’. However it was her work with the short lived but well remembered band “Fairground Attraction’’ that brought her to a much wider audience and gained her a UK number on single and album with the song Perfect and parent album The First Of A Million Kisses.
2010 saw Eddi play sold out shows promoting her album Love Is The Way all over the world. It also brought Eddi’s Hollywood movie debut as she featured in Richard Linklater’s, Me And Orson Welles with Zak Efron and Clare Danes. Eddi plays a chanteuse in the movie and is featured singing Lets Pretend That There’s A Moon with the Jools Holland Orchestra. The original soundtrack features another two performances from Eddi.
Eddi will be performing at the Hawk’s Well theatre on Wed 29th February with John Douglas, Alan Kelly and Boo Hewerdine. She played a fantastic gig at the Hawk’s Well in February 2011. Tickets are selling fast so call the Hawk’s Well on 071 916 1518 or visit www.hawkswell.com.

The Hawk’s Well Theatre turned 30 on the 12th of January 2012! Here at the Hawk’s Well we are in celebratory mode. We are celebrating 30 years of fantastic performances from professional and local theatre companies, bands, musicians, comedians and performers. The party to celebrate will take place on Saturday 21st following the final performance of Druid’s Big Maggie. Druid were the first theatre company to perform at the Hawk’s Well when the theatre opened in 1982 with their production of Much Ado About Nothing and we are delighted to have them back to help us celebrate.
On Saturday 21st January at 6.30pm the exhibition ’30 years at the Hawk’s Well’ will be opened. The staff of the theatre have been busy travelling down memory lane and compiling this exhibition of photographs, old programmes and memorabilia from the performances which the theatre has hosted over the decades. The exhibition opens on Saturday 21st and will be on display in the foyer of the theatre for a month.
Garry Hynes, Artistic Director of Druid is the special guest of the theatre on Saturday night and will mark the occasion with a few words at 7pm along with speeches from Gerry McCanny, Chairperson of the Hawk’s Well Theatre, Marie O’Byrne, Director of the theatre, Val Balance from the Arts Council and the Mayor Rosaleen O’Grady.
Following the sold out performance of Big Maggie the Hawk’s Well will open its doors to the public to celebrate 30 years of performance with music from Sligo band Anything Goes in the foyer from 10.30 til late.
As part of the celebrations the Hawk’s Well logo was redesigned by Sligo designer Daragh Stewart whose Mother Pauline Stewart designed the original logo 30 years ago. The theatre’s new website will also be launched on the night.
Celebrations will continue throughout the year with a special Birthday gig every month. The Birthday gig for January is of course Big Maggie followed by Sligo Musical Society’s production of The Wizard of Oz in February, Millennium Forum Productions ‘Carthaginians’ by Frank McGuinness in March and the Kilfenora Céilí Band in April.

The hugely successful and critically acclaimed 2010 production of Brighton by Waterford playwright, Jim Nolan comes to the Hawk’s Well on Tuesday the 4th of October. The show has met with standing ovations, celebration and acclaim
since its opening at Garter Lane Arts Centre last May.
Brighton is a poignant, richly comic and resoundingly affirmative hymn to old age.
Set in the Sisters of Calvary Nursing Home in London, Brighton follows elderly Irishwoman, Fulham FC supporter and ‘Terror of the Third Floor’, Lily Thompson on her last great adventure. Sustained by her daily pilgrimage to the shopping mall at Hammersmith Tube station and the friendship of Care Assistant and passionate Arsenal fan, Dave, the arrival of Jack, a new resident, brings them all unexpected challenges and new horizons.
Directed by Ben Barnes, the production sees the return of Gillian Hanna as Lily and Andrew Macklin as Dave, joined by Royal Shakespeare Company veteran, Christopher Saul as Jack, with set and costume design by Joe Vanek, lighting design by John Comiskey and sound and projection design by Mark Graham.

Choreographer Fearghus Ó Conchúir made Niche in Dublin at the tail-end of Ireland’s building boom. In the gloom that followed, Niche celebrates our ability to work together and adapt to new circumstances. In this tour, Niche continues to adapt offering each audience a tailor-made show: for each performance, local dancers will join the international cast of Niche, bringing a new flavour to the work. The result is Open Niche.
“Ó Conchúir’s theme is universal and his thoughtful choreography is robust enough to take any number of readings, whatever the context.” The IrishTimes
Workshops: There is an opportunity for a group to work with Fearghus Ó Conchúir in the week leading up to the show. If you are interested contact the theatre on 071 916 1518 and ask for Sarah Jane.
